The grades K-4 performance tasks currently come from several sources: the Council of Chief State School Officers State Collaborative on Assessment and Student Standards , the Third International Mathematics and Science Study , the National Assessment of Educational Progress the Kentucky Department of Education the New Standards Science Reference Exam Project , the New York State Education Department , the RAND Institution, and Illinois Learning Standards .
Some tasks cover multiple content areas. All tasks include a Science as Inquiry component. The specific inquiry skills are displayed in the assessment chart for the task.

Performance Task Example #2- Science(Heat Retention) 5th grade
here are two examples for each score point ranging from 4 to 0. Explanations of the scores were written by staff from American College Testing (ACT) who conducted training and scoring of field tested events.

-Student will watch short clip about life cycle of a lady bug
-Students will complete Science Journal/Students will be able to write all of 4 stages of a lady bug
-Based on video, students will draw a 4 stages of life cycle a lady bug
-Students must be able to remember what was the 4 stages of a lady bug and draw each stage.
